Senior Advice
So you need a photographer? Anyone can say they are a photographer, so don’t underestimate the value of a photographer’s experience and personality.
Photography is more than a good camera. Beware of the words “ all location” and “natural light”. These are the words the amateurs use because they don’t have a studio, do not know lighting or can’t afford lights. Lighting is very important, and if done correctly, softens wrinkles, slims the body and allows for many types of special effects.
Also pay attention to the photographer’s pictures to see if they are all inside images or all outside images, if their subject’s entire face is fully lit, are their pictures all alike or like someone else’s? If so, you should rethink your decision. In addition, watch for those who charge for all kinds of extra services . It is also necessary, to make sure the photographer is in business officially and belongs to professional organizations.
The most important way to choose a photographer, and the most instantaneous way, is through their website, then phone, then email. You need to discuss with your photographer what your needs are for the photography shoot and discuss your budget.
Budget is a factor…you get what you pay for and the cheapest is far from the best. Budgets are a necessary evil so the studio should help you by discussing your needs and how they can meet them. Look at the prices and understand their pricing structure.
Creativity, quality of work, reputation, lighting quality, usage, and the actual images are the criteria you should be looking for. The people, the service and their responsiveness are equally important.
Quality is the most important aspect. It does not bode well to accept the lowest quality. Creative vision and adaptability instead of repetitive posing is key.
If a photographer gives you a disc with your images, you as the customer need to realize that there is a good chance that you can run into problems such as the images are not color corrected for printing, or they could not be in a format you can easily use. Also, technology is constantly changing. Everything has gone digital now, but the CD may not always be a good system for storage of your images.
A personal consultation is usually necessary and prepares you and the studio for the best results. The facilities and all they have to offer you without traveling (no place to change clothes) are important factors also.
Lastly but very important on the list….don’t use a relative or friend for your photographer. Many have lost good friends and caused uncomfortable issues which could be easily avoided.
Remember, anyone can say they are a photographer….ask questions and expect answers, make sure their portraits are color corrected and that they deliver in a timely manner. Also, make sure they have a variety of products to choose from and ask to see the end product in person.
